East Region Central League
Oakley United 1 – 0 Kirkcaldy YM, 5th September 2009
After the free scoring exploits of last week, Oakley went into this match expecting an all
together more stern test.

Prolonged periods of rainfall had prevented the Oakley ground staff from cutting the grass
prior to the game and that coupled with strong wings and driving rain perhaps prevented
Oakley from playing a more fluent passing style. Indeed the conditions were probably the
leveller that Kirkcaldy needed to compete with Oakley over the 90 minutes.

Oakley started the game well. Jonathan Sinclair should have taken the lead for Oakley
inside 10 minutes. After a looping cross dropped onto his head after rebounding off the
cross bar, it looked easier to score than to miss but somehow YM keeper Ness managed to
grab the ball at a second attempt.

Nevertheless, Oakley’s fans needn’t have worried, as on 17 minutes young left back King
scored a goal that will surely be up there as a contender for goal of the season. He picked
the ball up about 25 yards out, after a nice one to with Willie Campbell. He then drove the
ball into the box before skinning 3 defenders and thundering  into the top left corner.
James McFadden couldn’t have done it any better. If Cowdenbeath have a better left back
playing for them this season then he must be some player!

The game ebbed and flowed with few clear cut chances for either side in the opening
period. In truth Kirkcaldy were beginning to dominate in midfield as Oakley’s touch seemed
to dessert them.

The second half was much like the first. The game became bogged down in the midfield
with neither team able to offer much in the way of attacking threat.

On 60 minutes Bannatyne broke free of his marker drove the ball in off the right wing and
fired a shot from 20 yards that whistled narrowly past the post. In defence of ‘Pedro’ it was
a good effort on his weaker foot. Five minutes later Celly broke into the box but his touch
let him down and ex Oakley keeper Ness saved at this feet.

Substitute Peter Fyfe should have wrapped up the game for United on 80 minutes. After
doing all the hard work beating 2 defenders and the keeper he fired a tame effort at goal
which was cleared off the line by the Kirkcaldy defence.

Kirkcaldy then had claims for a pass back in the last 5 minutes. After a desperate goal
mouth scramble the ball was gathered on the floor by impressive Oakley debutant keeper
Kris Bowers. Even the most neutral of supporters would have failed to call that a pass back
and the referee made the correct call in waving pay on.

Verdict
Truth be told, Oakley never really got going in this game. However if we can win games
when the going is tough then that bodes well for the rest of the season. Two games in and
two wins... What more can you ask for?

Man of the Match
After his superb solo goal, I could have gone for young King, but after a commanding
display at the back I would have to go for Craig Lumsden. He looks more assured every
week. Lucky for Oakley that our games are not on TV as I think a big senior club would have
snapped him up long ago!
