East Region Central League
Newburgh 1 – 5 Oakley United, 12th September 2009
Oakley travelled north to Newburgh on the back of two wins in their opening two league
fixtures. The Oakley travelling supporters didn’t have too long to wait before Colin Mullen
fired them into the lead firing a vicious volley into the top of the net after only 3 minutes.
After 15 minutes it was all Oakley, with the home team rarely making it over the half way
line. Then for some unknown reason Oakley seemed to take their foot off the gas allowing
Newburgh to inexplicably equalise with their first chance. At first there seemed to be little
threat as the ball came in from the left wing. However, following two failed clearances the
ball to landed at their strikers’ feet and he calmly fired past the helpless Bowers.
The remainder of the half was pretty scrappy. Oakley had a few chances with Lee Celantano
looking dangerous up front, firing narrowly wide after beating 2 Burgh defenders.
Ht: Newburgh 1-1 Oakley United
Stevie Kay had obviously given the lads a bit of a dressing down at the interval and they
came out firing on all cylinders. Coco Mullen was causing havoc in the Newburgh defence
and his confidence was rewarded early in the second period with a fantastic second goal.
As I had just spilled half a mince pie down my trousers I missed it, but by all accounts it was
pretty good.
Johnny Sinclair made it three with half an hour to go. I did see this one! In fact if you click
here you can watch it for yourselves!
Peter Bannatyne marked an improved second half showing with a fine goal with 20 minutes
to go, before Coco finished off the scoring with his third after 76 minutes.
Vedict: A bit shaky in the first half, but the teams performance in the second half shows
that we will be hard team to beat this season. Oakley looked dangerous on every attack
and in truth had it not been for the Newburgh keeper it may have been a double figure
score.
Man of the Match: Coco, no question about it.
Team Line Up:
Bowers
